Mr Blair is running scared. Could it be the thought of a much smaller majority if he waits? Or the stupid economy? (Not according to Mr Brown).
There will be a recession. That's the message from the stock market in recent weeks. If Blair delays he will find New Labour taking the blame. If he calls a general election, he will be accused of deserting rural communities. It's a no-win situation.
Investors are likewise in a no-win situation .. that is, if they listen to conventional advice. Financial advisers, keen to scream "Buy while it is cheap", are notoriously unable to say "Sell while it's dear". Investors must make up their own minds to act decisively.
Lonely decisions are for everyone, not just for Mr Blair.
